A Rustic Adobe Bathroom with a Stone Tub and Wooden Shutters

July 20, 2026

Adobe-toned plaster, shuttered light, a carved stone tub and lantern glow: a Spanish-desert bathroom built from clay, timber and shadow.

The idea behind it

The design trusts three materials — earth, wood, stone — and lets light do the decorating. Shutter stripes by day, candle pools by night: the room changes hourly without containing a single ornament that could go out of style.

Modern function hides inside the ancient shell: glass shower screen, black mixer taps, LED niche lighting. Keeping technology visually minimal is what lets the fantasy hold.

What you will need

  • Clay plaster or suede-effect walls, Uneven, hand-applied warmth on every surface

  • Interior wooden shutters, Louvred panels that stripe and soften daylight

  • Carved stone tub, An oval with visible tooling, centred at the window

  • Boulder basins on plastered vanity, Twin rock bowls over open towel storage

  • Timber beams and plank ceiling, Real or faux, stained warm and left matte

  • Relief-tile shower, Carved geometric porcelain behind clear glass

  • Woven pendant and amber sconces, Lantern-warm light layered low

Steal the look

  1. Step 1

Finish walls in clay-toned plaster or suede-effect paint, rounding corners for softness.

  2. Step 2

Add beams and a plank ceiling, stained mid-brown and sealed against steam.

  3. Step 3

Fit louvred wooden shutters inside the window reveal.

  4. Step 4

Centre the stone tub under the window with a black floor filler and stool of candles beside it.

  5. Step 5

Build the plastered vanity with twin boulder basins, black wall taps and arched black mirrors.

  6. Step 6

Line the shower in carved relief tile with a lit niche behind frameless glass.

  7. Step 7

Light everything amber — woven pendant, sconces, candles — and lay a striped jute runner between zones.

Frequently AskedQuestions

Suede- or clay-effect paints applied with random cross-strokes mimic adobe's softness; a tinted limewash adds mineral depth. Round any sharp drywall corners with filler first — soft edges sell the illusion.

Yes — louvred hardwood or PVC-core shutters handle humidity with ventilation, give precise privacy control, and cast the striped light that defines this style. Seal real wood against moisture.

Low and warm: 2200-2700K amber sconces, a woven or lantern pendant and generous candles. Avoid cool downlight grids — even shadows are part of the rustic material story.
