A Victorian bedroom's chimney-side alcove becomes a novelistic vanity corner: dusky rose paint lined in gold frames an oval brass mirror and twin column sconces, above a walnut dressing table with cane-fronted storage and a rose velvet chair on castors.
The idea behind it
The scheme uses the house's own architecture as the vanity's frame. Painting the arched recess a deep rose against grey-green walls creates a picture-within-picture, and the gold trim tracing the arch turns the alcove into a gilt frame with the mirror as its portrait.
Furniture stays honest and movable: a warm walnut dressing table with cane panels, a velvet desk chair on brass castors, a Persian rug softening dark parquet. Nothing is fitted, everything is inheritable — the corner could be dismantled and re-loved in another house within an hour.
Lighting recreates gaslight with modern wiring: ribbed-glass column sconces at face height either side of the mirror, an alabaster bowl pendant above, heavy velvet curtains managing the bay window's daylight. Warm, dim, and precisely right for a mirror.
What you will need
Arched alcove (or painted arch), The recess that frames the whole vanity; paint two shades deeper than the room.
Oval brass mirror, A slim-framed Victorian-style oval hung centred in the arch.
Walnut dressing table, An antique or reproduction table with dovetailed drawers and cane or panel fronts.
Twin column sconces, Ribbed-glass gaslight-style wall lights at 150 cm either side of the mirror.
Rose velvet desk chair, A curved-back chair on brass castors that tucks under the table.
Gold trim border, Slim gilt beading or painted line tracing the arch outline.
Persian-style rug, A traditional red-and-blue rug grounding the corner on dark floors.
Collected accessories, Brush pots, perfume bottles, framed photographs — used things, arranged loosely.
Steal the look
Step 1
Choose the alcove (or mark an arch on a flat wall) and paint it a dusky rose against the room's quieter wall colour.
Step 2
Add a slim gold trim or painted line tracing the arch, about 5 cm inside its edge.
Step 3
Place the walnut dressing table spanning the alcove width, its top around 75 cm.
Step 4
Hang the oval mirror centred in the arch, its middle at seated eye height (115–125 cm).
Step 5
Wire twin sconces at 150 cm with warm dimmable bulbs (2200–2700K).
Step 6
Lay the Persian rug so the chair's castors stay on it when pulled out.
Step 7
Style the tabletop with real, used objects — brushes, scent, photos — rather than staged trays.
Step 8
Let the room's period features (fireplace, cornicing, velvet curtains) stay dominant; the vanity is a supporting character done perfectly.

Frequently AskedQuestions
Paint the alcove a deeper shade than the room, fit a dressing table that spans its width, and centre a mirror with sconces either side at about 150 cm. The colour change frames the nook like a proscenium arch — and if you have no alcove, painting an arch shape onto a flat wall achieves the same effect.
Oval. It echoes Victorian dressing mirrors, softens the straight lines of panelling and alcoves, and its curve flatters the face by framing head and shoulders naturally. Choose a slim brass or gilt frame rather than a heavy one.
Auction houses, estate sales and online marketplaces are full of walnut and mahogany dressing tables at a fraction of new-furniture prices. Look for dovetailed drawers and solid wood backs; scratches polish out with wax far more easily than veneer chips.
