A Cream Mudroom with Locker Cubbies and a Cushioned Bench

Seven lit cream lockers over a continuous cushioned bench, boot drawers below and cupboards above: the family drop zone as fine joinery.

The idea behind it

The design's real product is domestic order: each vertical slot maps to a human, so tidiness needs no negotiation. The joinery just makes the system beautiful enough to keep.

Warm light inside the cubbies does double work — it flatters the joinery like retail display and makes children actually use their hooks, because lit storage reads as place, not hole.

What you will need

  • Locker cubby wall, Tall open bays with shiplap backs, one per family member

  • Continuous bench cushion, Performance fabric over the full drawer run

  • Boot drawers, Deep soft-close storage under the bench

  • Upper shaker cupboards, Seasonal swap storage above the baskets

  • Under-shelf lighting, Warm LED making each cubby glow

  • Woven baskets, One labelled basket per cubby shelf

  • Slate porcelain floor and runner, Boot-proof base with a washable warm layer

Steal the look

  1. Step 1

Count occupants, add one guest bay, and divide the wall into that many cubbies.

  2. Step 2

Build or convert tall frames with shiplap backs, basket shelf up top and two hook heights.

  3. Step 3

Run the bench as a topped drawer bank, cushioned in performance fabric.

  4. Step 4

Add shaker cupboards above and warm LED strips under the basket shelves.

  5. Step 5

Floor in textured slate porcelain with a woven runner down the traffic line.

  6. Step 6

Fit nickel hooks and cup pulls; label baskets discreetly per person.

  7. Step 7

Finish the opposite wall with a slim console, lamp, mirror and plant — the polite entry layer.

Perfect for

  • Families of three to seven with school-run mornings
  • Homes with side or garage entries doing daily duty
  • Farmhouse and coastal tastes wanting order with warmth
  • Anyone whose hallway currently stores shoes by archaeology

Avoid if

  • The space is a narrow corridor — lockers need 1.6m facing depth
  • You prefer closed storage only; open cubbies show real life
  • A single-person household — simpler hooks may serve better

Frequently AskedQuestions

35-40cm deep keeps coats hung without swallowing floor space; benches want 40-45cm depth at 45cm height. Individual cubbies work best 40-55cm wide — enough for a coat's shoulders per person.

Textured porcelain in mid-tone slate or stone hides grit between cleanings and shrugs off water and salt. Add a washable woven runner for warmth; skip hardwood at the entry line.

Territory plus ritual: one labelled cubby per person, hooks children can reach, a basket for each hat-and-glove set, and a weekly drawer reset. Storage without assignment always regresses to piles.
